The film is inspired by the idea of doomsday global events that coincide with the final round of the Mayan Long Count Calendar on or about December 12, 2012 (winter solstice the northern hemisphere).
Curtis Jackson (John Cusack) is a divorced father who has been moonlighting as a limousine driver and a writer, while his ex-wife (Amanda Peet) and her children lived together with her new boyfriend, Gordon (Thomas McCarthy).
In the Maya city of Tikal in Guatemala, the victims of mass suicide seemed to believe the Mayan calendar, which predicts the end of the world that coincide with Galactic Alignment, which occurred on December 21, 2012, the date of the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. IHC (Institute for Human Continuity), a secret organization, aware of this situation and begin to build a large ship beneath the Himalayas that are designed to deal with many natural disasters to save humans, certain species, and humans are the most precious treasure when the apocalypse finally happens. There is debate about how and when the world will tell their citizens, and how to choose the people who will be saved from this Judgement. Meanwhile, when it was on his way toward Yellowstone afternoon with her two children, Jackson met Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson), who brought his own radio show about the Mayan prediction of December 21, 2012.
Large cracks formed on the San Andreas Fault, California, and even though the government assured everything is safe, Jackson was not convinced. Hiring a private plane and obtain emergency items, she went to her house in LA to save his family and Gordon from the earthquake due to movement of the Earth's skin. Jackson quickly gathered his family, and after a long and dangerous journey with the crumbling streets toward the Santa Monica Airport, the new girlfriend Amanda, Gordon uses his flying ability to rescue this family. The entire city of Los Angeles who fell began to sink into the Pacific Ocean. When the plane more fuel shortage, the group saw the possibility of landing in Wyoming. Jackson to take this opportunity to meet Charlie. Against her wishes, Jackson and Lily went to look for Charlie, even though the van was found empty. Through radio, Charlie tells his audience that he had gone to the mountains to witness the Resurrection. Jackson drove the van to find and save Charlie, but Charlie refused to go. When Jackson and Lily run away from an erupting volcano, Charlie mentioned a map in the van which will show the route running. Jackson and Lily went back to the plane through the rain of lava stone. Upon arrival, Lily ran to the plane, but Jackson remained in the van to find the map, and it is too long. When the ground is open, the van fell into a crack. Jackson's family fears, but should go. Jackson holds the edge, and ran to the plane when it lands behind him continued to collapse. He is quick enough to enter the plane.

However, the pilot, Sasha (Johann Urb) told him that he needed a copilot and Jackson said that Gordon is a trained pilot. Thus, this group eventually boarded the plane while the airport was destroyed by an earthquake.
When they were in the air, Sasha realized that this plane did not have enough fuel to fly to China. He told Gordon, and they agreed to land on water. Sasha later learned that they no longer over the ocean: Earth's skin has moved thousands of miles and they lead into the Himalayas. Knowing the risk of landing in the snow, Sasha told passengers to go to the storage of cargo in which many cars stored there, while he and Gordon maintain control and opened the cargo door of the cockpit. Their plan is to remove the car from the cargo storage. Gordon had to leave Sasha and ran to the car in time. They (except the pilot) managed to get away with using a Bentley Continental GT, while Sasha landed his plane in a ravine, which then collapsed. Other group members landed safely. Tamara cried and asked that they return to look for Sasha. Before they act, the Chinese helicopter transporting large animals flying above them. One helicopter landed, although these groups know that they must pay for the ride. Yuri pay for himself and his son, but refused to pay for someone else. Before entering the helicopter, he told Tamara that she knew to do with Sasha.
